NICE CAPITAL OF THE SEA IN 2025: 3RD UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON THE OCEAN IN JUNE

Nice, Capital of the Sea in 2025!
From June 3 to 13, 2025, the third United Nations Ocean Conference will take place, with more than 120 Heads of State and 20,000 delegates attending in the City of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis.
In anticipation of this international summit, France has initiated the Year of the Sea — titled The Sea in Common.
France and Costa Rica have been selected by the United Nations to co-host this globally significant event.
On this occasion, the City of Nice, a symbolic territory of the Mediterranean coastline, has scheduled a series of events that will engage stakeholders from the cultural, maritime, educational, and non-profit sectors, along with more than 15,000 researchers and scientists.
The main objective of this major event is to enhance understanding of the Ocean, promote the richness of marine environments, and raise awareness of the importance of their preservation among the general public. The Year of the Sea will be organized around several major themes:
The Arts and Ocean Biennale
Titled The Sea Around Us, the 6th edition of the Biennale of Arts — renamed Arts and Ocean Biennale for the occasion — aims to pay a vibrant tribute to the seas and oceans through 11 exhibitions and related installations/events. These will blend historical collections with contemporary creations, showcased in museums and key cultural venues across Nice (including Le 109 and Villa Arson), as well as through an art trail across various neighborhoods. A major new feature this year: this trail will turn Nice into an open-air museum entirely dedicated to the Ocean for an entire season.
The Ocean University
The Year of the Sea 2025 also invites you to explore the rich program of the specially created Ocean University. Open to all, this interdisciplinary program offers conferences and talks to better understand the challenges of UNOC-3, explore the interactions between humans and the ocean, and celebrate the wealth of marine environments through science, arts, and culture.
The Blue Program
Experience the rhythm of the oceans all year long through the many cultural and artistic events in the Blue Program: performances, film screenings, workshops, live shows, readings, concerts, exhibitions... These events aim to “maritimise minds” — helping the public better grasp the need to preserve the marine environment, sparking interest in ocean life, and encouraging people to act for the Ocean. The Mediterranean Sea, a daily presence in the lives of Nice’s residents, will be a special highlight of the program.
CLIMATØ, an Eco-Friendly Show
Macif, patron of the Ocean University, and the City of Nice’s Environmental Office are pleased to invite you to CLIMATØ, the new show by Mathieu Duméry. Combining humor with science communication, this unique performance offers a fun way to deepen your understanding of marine life issues.
The show will take place at the Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 7:30 PM.
Creation of the "Pavilion of the Sea"
You may have already noticed that the Port of Nice has undergone an ambitious redevelopment in recent months. A modular 3,600 m² “event hall,” with a capacity of 2,100 people, has been built to host conferences, exhibitions, performances, and other events.
In addition, a new cruise terminal has been created. Designed to accommodate high-end cruise ships, this 3,800 m² facility will also serve as a venue for conferences. Its rooftop terrace will offer a unique panoramic view of the port, the city of Nice, and the surrounding hills.
This large-scale event has led to a call for expressions of interest, resulting in the selection of 18 projects with a total budget of nearly €200,000. The “Antoine Risso” Call for Projects — aimed at supporting local initiatives to preserve ocean biodiversity — has selected 33 projects with a budget of €150,000.
At the conclusion of the international discussions held during the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, the Nice Ocean Action Plan will be adopted.
