SMALL IMMO N°80: ELENA, THE ARTISANE OF THE HEART IN DOWNTOWN NICE

SMALL IMMO N°80: ELENA, THE ARTISANE OF THE HEART IN DOWNTOWN NICE

In the heart of Nice, where footsteps echo on the lively sidewalks of the city center, the Elena Ceramica boutique settles in with discretion. It does not impose itself, it rather lets itself be discovered, like a place that prefers softness to brilliance. Located at 34 rue Gioffredo, it lives to the rhythm of a neighborhood that is crossed, frequented, always in motion. And yet, behind this address, something slows down. Something invites one to look differently. Elena Hillcoat Mesnil is driven by something else, an artisan’s soul. Her activity is that of an artist, entirely devoted to the making of ceramic objects, intended to accompany daily life or to inhabit spaces. This simple setting already tells a story: that of work done by hand, with her heart, without artifices, without intermediary, without distance between the idea and the material.
Created in 2021, the company settled here in 2024. Elena wanted a place to materialize her art, her reason for living, her essential: the intimate nature of creation, the deeply human dimension of the gesture. Because working alone means fully inhabiting each stage, from beginning to end. Ceramics impose a particular relationship with time. Nothing is abrupt in it. One must shape, wait, let dry, then fire. Each object is born from this patience. It carries within it a precious, silent slowness, which contrasts with the external turmoil of modern life without hindsight, always in action and in immediacy.
To this practice is added the creation of costume jewelry. Another scale, finer, even closer to the body. But the same care remains. The same link between the hand and what takes shape. Between what is made and what will one day be worn or simply placed somewhere, like a part of herself that she entrusts to us, preciously, patiently…
What is striking is the simplicity of all this. There is no visible staging, no imposed discourse. The boutique seems to exist with restraint, as if it lets the objects speak in its place. As if it trusts the presence of things rather than words. Elena’s boutique is la dolce vita, it is the South… That of Nino Ferrer, where time lasts a long time. This restraint almost becomes a breath. It opens a different space, calmer, more attentive, soothing, reassuring. Yes, here everything becomes possible because one takes the time.
Ceramics, by essence, keep the trace of the gesture. They retain something of the moment when they were created. A pressure, a movement, an intention. Even without knowing the exact forms on display, one knows that each of them carries this discreet imprint.
Elena Ceramica is not only a boutique. It is a way of doing, a way of being present. A delicate presence in the middle of the city, where time seems to settle a little differently. Where each object silently reminds that there still exist patient gestures, slow creations, and places that choose simplicity as a language, wisdom rather than passion, art rather than the industrial, beauty and us.
