INTERVIEW: MEETING WITH NATHALIE GALLO FROM DOMAINE DES MAPLIERS IN VAR
Domaine des Mapliers: A Family Legacy Rooted in History and Passion
On the ancestral lands once occupied by the Knights Templar in Lorgues, the Gallo family has created an exceptional estate. Alongside her husband Hervé, Nathalie passionately perpetuates a heritage carved from stone and vine.
The origins of the estate are, above all, a family story?
Absolutely. It all began with a passion that was passed down through generations. My father-in-law, Jean, was a highly respected wine distributor on the French Riviera and represented prestigious wine houses for more than forty years. He was the one who ignited this passion in us.
In 2013, together with my husband Hervé and my in-laws, we settled in Lorgues, on a place known as Mappe. By combining the name of the locality with the history of the Knights Templar, Les Mapliers was born quite naturally. Everything had to be created from scratch—the brand, the wines, the cellar. That is how the adventure began.
Who brings the estate to life on a daily basis?
A team of passionate individuals who share the same values: authenticity, quality, and respect for nature. Antoine, our vineyard manager, oversees both the vines and the cellar, supported by a team of consulting oenologists and a full-time cellar master.
Tastings, festive evenings, events… What kind of experiences do you want to offer your visitors?
For more than five years, we worked on creating a one-thousand-square-metre venue built from stone and wood, embracing the authentic spirit of Provence. We wanted to welcome guests exactly as we envisioned.
Of course, we offer wine tastings, but also our summer Festins, held every Friday evening from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Guests can enjoy a local food truck, live music, and a terrace overlooking the vineyards. The atmosphere is family-friendly, authentic, and thoughtfully curated.
Organic farming, hand-harvested grapes, CSR certification… Is this philosophy about more than just wine?
Without question. We wanted to create a place where people could come to relax, breathe, and reconnect. Our wines are already vegan, and we are currently pursuing both vegan and CSR certifications.
Constantly striving to go further in our respect for nature is fundamental to us, just as authenticity and simplicity are.
Three collections, three distinct worlds. Can you tell us more?
L'Ombra Calheta is inspired by the Marseille Tarot and by the winemaker's work in harmony with nature and the stars.
L'Abacus is our flagship cuvée. Its name refers to the master's staff used in Templar lodges.
And more recently, we launched Cuvée Jean, a tribute to my father-in-law. Fewer than one thousand numbered bottles have been produced, making it a truly exclusive release.
If the estate were something other than a wine, what would it be?
A season: spring, symbolizing renewal.
And two materials: wood and stone. They are the elements that define everything here.
What advice would you give to those who have not yet discovered Domaine des Mapliers?
Take the time to visit us.
Just an hour from the French Riviera, another Provence awaits—authentic, preserved, and steeped in history. Tourists instinctively understand this, while those living on the coast sometimes forget it.
The Var region has so much to offer: its villages, landscapes, vineyards, and estates. And the sea is never very far away.
